New Studio Reveal! Part 1

It’s finally complete! My new home studio in Dillsburg is officially opening on January 10th—my twice-past client, Deb, has the honor of being my first client in the new location. But before I can photograph clients, I needed to play around with the lighting and see what worked the best in the space—strobe or constant.

Athena, my lead stylist, was supposed to come to the studio on Friday and be my test subject, but she’s feeling under the weather, so I texted my friend Jensen, ‘Hey! Wanna come play at the studio?’ (Spoiler alert: she did.)

My goal with the studio décor: look like another room in the Ashcombe Mansion, where I’ve been shooting since May while waiting for the studio space to be completed. I looked for months at bedspreads, curtains, and rugs, trying to select the best color scheme and details for a boudoir session. In the end, I went with muted tones of pink and purple, with a lot of neutral beige to compliment anyone’s skin tone, all the while not distracting from the client.

So, what did I decide is the best lighting setup for the space? Both strobes and constant lighting! Each setup has their own look: strobes give crisper shadows while throwing less light to the background for a moodier vibe. Constant lights proved a softer, romantic look and will light up the background.

Why am I telling you about my lighting? Because I believe the more I can educate you on the process—the “how”—the faster you trust that I know what I’m doing. The more you know, the less nerve-wracking a boudoir session will be for you—you’ll relax faster and have fun! I LOVE lighting—good lighting decreases the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes, eliminates dark circles under the eyes, and diminishes scars and cellulite. It can smooth skin AND help tell your story. Want light and airy? That’s lighting. Want dark and moody? That’s lighting. There is a science behind lighting—it blows my mind what it can do!

I shot Friday’s session around the bed because I wanted to show off the new bedroom furniture, bedding, and curtains. I have a real bed in the studio for the first time in almost ten years! No more air mattresses. For Part II of the studio reveal, the focus will be around the purple loveseat and the makeup vanity… keep an eye out for those images.

I would love to photograph a boudoir session for you—January 2024 is booked solid, and February only has two session dates available. I am currently booking through April. Contact me today to discuss how you envision your session.

Until next time,

Shannon
